Special Edition: All the way to Malacca

Updated: Jul 15, 2018

1. Who prompted the idea of this trip?

Yeshi: Everyone wanted a trip! After the whole semester in the lab, we wanted some excitement to refresh our lab life haha. We just randomly talked about a short field trip during lunch and then decided to go.

2. Was it troublesome to organize the trip with a big group?

Yeshi: Umh, a bit. We had so many ideas, even just on the question of how to go there, we had plan A, B C and D lol. We also created a shared Excel sheet where we noted down the places that we wanted to visit and proceeded to vote for.

Christine: Chiwei helped us with a lot of the arrangements, being a Malaysian. hehe.

3. Who was the decision maker?

Yeshi: Christine!

4. How did you go there?

Yeshi: We took a bus at Queen Street Bus Terminal near Bugis after school. The bus will take you to the customs at the border and then to Malacca.

Christine: You can easily buy bus tickets from SG to most places in MY online using websites like Bus Online or Easybook!

5. What's the first thing you guys did there?

Yeshi: Upon arrival, we headed to the famous satay celup place: Capitol Satay for supper. It was superb! It was my first time eating satay in this style and the waiter kept adding satay sauce and grounded peanuts to the pot generously!

Christine: If you're not picky about hygiene, it's truly a nice experience with a large group of friends.

6. What's the craziest thing that happened during the trip?

Yeshi: We planed to catch the sunrise at Pantai Klebang Beach. So we rested in the hotel for a while and headed to the beach at around 3:30am. Rather than seeing the sunrise, we spent almost 5 hours, from before sunrise to well after sunrise, in the beach, looking for my phone lol.

Christine: It was a really strange and regretful experience, but luckily Yeshi was a sport. We even called the police asking if they had a metal detector out of desperation,

7. What's your recommendation in Malacca?

Yeshi: House of Museums. Mr. Ty's stories definitely will impress you.

Christine: If you're fond of old-school vintage items and stories, this is a place to consider visiting.

8. What else did you eat there?

Yeshi: We tried the famous chicken rice balls, peranakan dishes and snacks at the Jonker Street night market.

9. What did you guys do on the last day?

Yeshi: We went to the Baboon House for brunch - a really nice place, renovated from an ancestral home. We were arranged to sit in a nice place surrounded by greens, though the table was a bit small for the six of us. The food there was normal, but the environment was really nice and peaceful.

Christine: We were pretty lucky we got seated without a reservation.

10. How did you feel about the trip?

Yeshi: It's the first Tan-Ong family trip! It's so nice to have someone to guide you in the tour and you just follow haha. Though the phone getting lost was a sad and mysterious thing, it made the trip more memorable~ And so grateful to have friends like them!!!

Christine: Was definitely a memorable trip and hoping for another chance to go with our growing Tan-Ong family somewhere far again in the future.
