A mile of gold in Bugis

Updated: Jul 8, 2018

1. Where did you head for breakfast that day?

Christine: We actually ate at Lavender for breakfast, it's an MRT stop away from Bugis. We've been eyeing this popular brunch cafe named AEIOU. Unfortunately, this cafe, despite being so dainty, is now closed. :(

2. What did you like about AEIOU?

Christine: Their facade which was straight out from the 70s, their interior design which sported so much artistic clutter, and the entire vintage feel that you got from the cafe. They even had a piano and a Christmas tree when we came because it was December then.

3. Was the food equally good?

Christine: To be honest it wasn't that great, but the avocado coffee did live up to the hype. They serve an avocado smoothie and an espresso separately and you're supposed to mix the two together to get your avocado coffee! Yeshi and I shared a glass because I'm not even supposed to be having milk. This was one of the few exceptions.

4. Where did you head after?

Christine: We didn't have any idea of where to go at first, so we just started walking and soon found ourselves in Bugis.

Yeshi: We also ran into a dilemma whether we should take a bus or walk. And we finally decided to walk under the sun, but it was worthwhile haha.

5. Why did you decide to go inside the Golden Mile Complex?

Christine: Not to be confused with the Golden Mile Tower (where the Projector cinema is located...more on that later) right beside it. I've always been fascinated of the architecture of this mixed-residential/commercial block. Especially after watching this video. You can also read this article to get better acquainted with this mysterious gem.

6. What did you find fascinating inside the building?

Christine: Everything! The architecture, the windows, the staircase, and the culture within the complex itself. On the first few floors, a mixture of people on their off-day can be found lying sprawled on the floor, having a picnic, sampling stores and dining in old restaurants. On the upper part, which is supposed to be off limits, were offices and residences.

Yeshi: Agreee with Christine! I enjoyed the whole exploration inside this building, especially the structure of the architecture. Many good spots for photography.

7. How did you get entry into that place?

Christine: We just kept trying our luck with the doors and figuring out how to get to the rooftop. The rooftop was again closed, as usual - but we did get to go to some pretty cool parts like the large tennis court and some floors lined with large circular windows.

Yeshi: Yes, we finally found an open place in a high floor that wasn't locked. I like the bright yellow pillars. However, it was sad that the whole roll of film I used that day was not normally exposed so all the photos are gone :(

8. What did you do after?

Christine: We went to the Golden Mile Tower to check out The Projector. The Projector prides itself with screening art and indie films in good hipster taste. They even sell alcohol for your cinematic pleasure. It's an old building so everything has a vintage feel as well.

Yeshi: I didn't know that there is a cinema here. It's like a hidden place and we went up through a small lift of vintage style. They seem to show many independent movies as well.

9. Did you go home after?

Christine: We got hungry exploring so we decided to eat at the Army Market food centre on the opposite side of the road.

Yeshi: I saw an instagram post about this colorful baguette from Mr.Baguette and marked it down in my Google maps. When I realized this store was just nearby, we definitely went for a try. I personally prefer the lava one, it was more interesting but be cautious!

Christine: Yeah, the lava is bound to end up in your hands!

10. Then you went home already?

Christine: Actually we ended up watching a movie together and eating dinner. It was one of those few but memorable days that Yeshi and I actually ate three meals together.

Yeshi: We watched Coco since the reviews were quite nice and we always see the poster on the buses that pass by. And as with every movie we've watched together, we both cried during the movie.
