Tanjong Pagar in Black

Updated: Apr 15, 2018

1. What's the first thing you associate with Tanjong Pagar?

Christine: Mabel (our friend) lives there. Hmm...cafes, korean barbeque. And that ramen shop at Orchid Hotel with a long line all the time. Clearly, Mabel and food.

Yeshi: Japanese restaurants! There are lots of Japanese cuisines in Tanjong Pagar.

2. Is that the reason why you went there?

Christine: yes, specifically for tendon this time at Ginza Tendon Itsuki. And Mabel.

3. Weren't you worried about the long line?

Christine: We were, so we came there a little before 11:30am on a Saturday. We were supposed to be the first in line but they didn't allow customers in until they were complete. It was understandable with their limited space. There was complimentary barley water outside though while waiting.

4. What was the most enjoyable part of the experience?

Christine: The cosy atmosphere inside the small restaurant. I enjoyed sitting in front of the itamaes and watch them cook. Though it was difficult carrying a conversation among 3 persons on a long table.

Yeshi: Agreee! It's like those scenes in Japanese movies or dramas. The chef just cooks in front of you.

5. Why were you all wearing black?

Christine: Yeshi and I just coincidentally wore the same color so we told Mabel to wear black before she left her house. We're childish like that.

6. What did you do after lunch?

Christine: We were so full we decided to walk around the block for awhile.

7. Just walked?

Christine: We wandered into a Korean grocery and bought some stuff. I still had a Korean fruit vinegar fever then so I was looking at their fruit vinegars. Mabel ended up buying a large bottle of honey lemon.

Yeshi: Well, I am the one taking photos of them secretly.

8. What else?

Christine: We took photos obviously.

9. Is Tanjong Pagar worth visiting even if you're not particularly food crazy?

Christine: It's worth seeing the preserved architecture of the shophouses there. The streets are very dainty and colorful. Even if we all wore black that day, our photos are still bursting with color.

10. What was a memorable part of that day?

Christine: A random lady stopped and helped us take MULTIPLE photos (at different angles she directed herself) so that we could have one together. Her kindness was surprising but well appreciated.
