Star Gazing at West Coat Park

Updated: May 26, 2018

1. How did you know that there was a meteor shower that day?

Yeshi: There was a notice on my Facebook that day when I open it. The animation was cute and then I asked Christine if had she observed any meteor shower before.

2. Then you guys decided to go?

Yeshi: Yea, quite a random decision. So we searched more information about the Orionids Meteor Shower online, trying to figure out which day is the best one to observe. But most of them were based on US time.

Christine: Yes, we usually make such random decisions in the middle of the week, when the drone of the lab becomes too deafening.

3. Why did you decide to go West Coast Park?

Yeshi: We searched recommended places for star gazing in Singapore, and some top recommendations are the Science Center Observatory, Bishan Park and West Coast Park. We wanted to go to Bishan Park in the beginning, but picked West Coast Park in the end because it was nearer.

4. Any preparation?

Yeshi: Since both of us didn't have any experience in stellar photography, we immediately googled the basic rules for taking pictures of the milky way and stars. I also asked my friends, but the problem was our camera were just the elementary type, we were both not optimistic to get good photos that day. And we also 'borrowed' the tripod from our lab.

Christine: We bought a straw mat to lie down on.

5. When did you set off?

Yeshi: We met at Utown, where I stay, at around 12:00am and then started walked to West Coast Park.

6. How did you know the name of the stars?

Yeshi: We downloaded this app called Star Chart before going there. This app will let you know the the names of stars when you point your phone to the sky.

7. Did you manage to see any shower that night?

Yeshi: Actually, no. Because they sky was not that clear that night with some big clouds were floating around. But we saw Orion clearly.

8. How long did you stay there?

Yeshi: I think we arrived around 12:30 and then finally 'gave up' at around 5:00am.

Christine: By around 2:00 am, we got tired trying to capture shabby photos of the only stars we could see (it was too cloudy and no amount of fixing the camera settings helped) and laid down on the straw mat. We then had hallucinations of seeing the stars jumping around from staring at them too long.

9. What was the most unforgettable thing?

Yeshi: It was not about the stars, but the DOGS! And three dogs!

Christine: haha, yes Yeshi was petrified by the dogs. They were defending their territory adamantly. My favorite part was just lying there on the mat and talking about whatever. That was the longest time we had stayed up together.

10. What happened?

Yeshi: We switched to a big grassland in between, because it seemed to be a better spot for photography. When we set up all the things, waiting for the camera to do a time lap, suddenly there were dog barkings. And we didn't feel anything wrong until we found that they were actually super close to us. Well, I was the one super scared. Christine was trying to ask me not to look at them, but I couldn't take my eyes away from them, just to ensure that we were still in a safe distance. Then, after a while, they began to approach us, and there were 3 but we were 2. Then we decided to move, and move in a gentle and slow way. They finally calmed down without barking when we stayed away from 'their place'.
