Yishun: no strange murders, just sunrise and great porridge

Updated: Aug 1, 2018

1. Do you know the rumors about Yishun?

Christine: I've pretty much heard/read it from Singaporean forums that the running joke about Yishun is that it's the most terrifying place to live at in Singapore.

2. Why did you there?

Christine: We went to Yishun Dam. I read somewhere it was a good place to catch the sunrise, and that was enough to convince Yeshi to go! haha

Yeshi: Ya, I can be easily convinced haha. Actually I'm a sunrise and sundown 'collector'. The sky is always incredibly amazing in these magical moments, especially in Singapore.

3. Did it take long?

Christine: We left Clementi at 6:00 am since it takes around 30 min to get there by cab. The sun rises at around 7:00 am so it wasn't that long a wait, we were probably there 1-2 hrs. I was honestly hungry.

4. Did you see the sunrise?

Christine: We thought the clouds were going to ruin our view once again (!!! just like what happened when we tried stargazing at West Coast), but fortunately we were rewarded with a decent unfolding of another day.

5. What do you think about being in Yishun during the dark?

Christine: It wasn't that bad - it didn't look particularly dangerous. There were a lot of cyclists that day so we didn't feel particularly alone. Guess we're lucky or Yishun just gets an unfairly negative reputation.

Yeshi: During our stay there, there was actually a dad with his three kids early in the morning for their morning walk!

6. What did you do after?

Christine: Of course, breakfast!

Yeshi: As you can guess.

7. Where did you go?

Christine: We walked from Yishun Dam all the way to the new Yishun Hawker Centre. The photo below is one of the many hawker centers we passed by on the way. It was hard resisting all those other stalls.

8. Any interesting food options in Yishun Hawker Center?

Christine: Yes, a lot! I've been eyeing this place for beetroot noodles but that stall was closed that day. I particularly liked the porridge Yeshi ordered. Unfortunately we didn't take note of the stall name - this will have to be updated once we go back there.

Yeshi: The porridge was super nice! After selecting the one you like, you can still add extra toppings. The porridge was super soft and creamy.

9. What else did you discover at the Yishun Hawker Centre?

Christine: A real pinball machine! Spent a couple of dollars on it, we even asked for change from one of the stalls because it only accepts new 1 SGD coins.

Yeshi: OMG! It was my first time to see a real pinball machine! I thought that it only exists in the Microsoft desktop games.

10. Would you go back to Yishun?

Christine: Even just for the porridge, yes. Plus Lower Seletar Reservoir was also there - definitely a must visit for people looking for tranquil places in this city.

Yeshi: A big YES to this question! Especially recommended to those who live closer to the north side of SG. It's so far to travel from the west part haha.
